When, in the year 5, Judas of Gamala in Galilee started his organized opposition to Rome, he was joined by one of the leaders of the Pharisees, R. The Jewish Encyclopedia says of the Zealots: Many scholars date the origin of the Zealot party and movement to this incident. Judas of Galilee led a revolt ( Acts 5:37), which was suppressed only with some difficulty. 2:2) to determine the resources of the Jews provoked the wrath of the country. The tax denoted in the text was a specific tax… It was a poll tax, a tax instituted in A.D. New Testament scholar Willard Swartley writes: The taxes imposed on Judaea by Rome had led to riots. Main articles: Tax resistance and Zealotry Another suggestion often made is the denarius of Augustus with Caius and Lucius on the reverse, while coins of Julius Caesar, Mark Antony, and Germanicus are all considered possibilities. However, it has been suggested that denarii were not in common circulation in Judaea during Jesus' lifetime and that the coin may have instead been an Antiochan tetradrachm bearing the head of Tiberius, with Augustus on the reverse. The reverse shows a seated female, usually identified as Livia depicted as Pax. The coin is also called the "tribute penny." The inscription reads "Ti Caesar Divi Avg F Avgvstvs" ("Caesar Augustus Tiberius, son of the Divine Augustus"). The text identifies the coin as a δηνάριον dēnarion, and it is usually thought that the coin was a Roman denarius with the head of Tiberius. The inscription on the obverse reads Ti Caesar Divi Avg F Avgvstvs ("Caesar Augustus Tiberius, son of the Divine Augustus"), and the reverse reads Pontif Maxim ("Highest Priest"). Main article: Tribute penny A denarius featuring Tiberius. the Romans), to which he becomes indignant and criticizes the questioners by quoting the Book of Isaiah the fragment is interrupted immediately after that. Importantly, in this non-canon gospel, Jesus adds, "and give me what is mine." The same episode occurs in a fragment of the also apocryphal Egerton Gospel: Jesus is asked whether it is right to pay taxes to the rulers (i.e. Matthew 22:22 states that they "marvelled" ( ἐθαύμασαν) unable to trap him any further, and being satisfied with the answer, they went away.Ī similar episode occurs in the apocryphal Gospel of Thomas (verse 100), but there the coin in question is gold. They answered, "Caesar's," and he responded: "Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's". One of them showed him a Roman coin, and he asked them whose head and inscription were on it. Jesus first called them hypocrites, and then asked one of them to produce a Roman coin that would be suitable for paying Caesar's tax. In the Gospel of Mark the additional, provocative question is asked, "Should we pay or shouldn't we?" Then they asked him whether or not it is right for Jews to pay the taxes demanded by Caesar. Initially the questioners flattered Jesus by praising his integrity, impartiality, and devotion to truth. The governor was Pilate, and he was the man responsible for the collecting of taxes in Roman Judea. They anticipated that Jesus would oppose the tax, as their purpose was "to hand him over to the power and authority of the governor". The Tribute Money, by Peter Paul Rubens (1610–1615) The accounts in Matthew 22:15–22 and Mark 12:13–17 say that the questioners were Pharisees and Herodians, while Luke 20:20–26 says only that they were "spies" sent by "teachers of the law and the chief priests". The original message, coming in response to a question of whether it was lawful for Jews to pay taxes to Caesar, gives rise to multiple possible interpretations about the circumstances under which it is desirable for Christians to submit to earthly authority.Īll three synoptic gospels state that hostile questioners tried to trap Jesus into taking an explicit and dangerous stand on whether Jews should or should not pay taxes to the Roman authorities. This phrase has become a widely quoted summary of the relationship between Christianity, secular government, and society. " Render unto Caesar" is the beginning of a phrase attributed to Jesus in the synoptic gospels, which reads in full, "Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's" ( Ἀπόδοτε οὖν τὰ Καίσαρος Καίσαρι καὶ τὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ τῷ Θεῷ). The Tribute Money, by Titian (1516), depicts Jesus being shown the tribute penny. This article is about the phrase used by Jesus.

Again, as soon as I can find a suitable replacement, I am moving off this app. I am done waiting for them to fix this IOS support. Otherwise, I could use the IPAD for everything. Wake up - everyone uses IPADS with keyboards these days and the ONLY reason I can’t use my IPAD as my main device is because of this APP. I am done hearing the years of excuses as to why they can’t make a good IOS app. As soon as I can find a remote app with the same speed and features, I am going to migrate off this app. Otherwise, I would have cancelled years ago. I spend about $750 a month to use this app with over 30 techs and the only reason I don’t cancel my subscription and go to another app is because the remote access speed is faster than anything out there for international support. This app is horrible! We have been asking for YEARS to have the IOS support fixed and NOTHING! You can’t even type with a physical keyboard on your IPAD with this app and the mouse support is barely useable. As stated in the other review, I will forward this to our product management team and they will begin investigating. Splashtop Business isn’t a perfect solution either however, they are light years better on IOS. Our Splashtop Business account rep has already offered us a sweet deal to switch but we’re holding tight to see if ConnectWise can get this sorted in a reasonable amount of time. We like Splashtop a lot and I’d hate to make the full switch sometime in the future because they can’t get IOS input device support figured out. We use Splashtop as a backup to ConnectWise Control so the dev should take note that they should really put some time into figuring this out. One app I can point out that works exceptionally well is the Splashtop Business app and I’m sure regular Splashtop works just fine too. Other apps work perfectly fine and support physical keyboard and mouse just fine. Something is wrong with this scenario, as well as the dev excuses about an IOS limitation in similar review responses. Additionally, keyboards attached to an iPad are not auto detected and you are forced to press the mouse icon every time you need to type something. Now that IOS can support mouse input natively, there is no excuse not to allow a native mouse mode. We’ve been longtime ScreenConnect customers and its limitations on IOS in the past were excusable. "The Fungus of Eats" was written by Donovan, Phoenix, and Joe from a jam session. This song started with Donovan writing "Conception." He wanted the album to start with a bang and give a good introduction as to what the rest of the album would sound like. "Conception" starts at 0:00, "The Fungus of Eats" starts at 1:37, 'Duggle" starts at 4:47, "Journey" starts at 7:31, "Redeem" starts at 11:09, and "Arrival" starts at 13:31. This song is actually split into multiple sections. This led to us calling it a "Suite" because it seemed too disjoint to be one song. The last song written was Kitchen Suite, which was the only song we collaborated on. La Bestia was the first song written, along with another song that we decided to use as a bonus track called "Snow." Then came Once Upon a Time, Jacob's Lullaby, Clandestiny, Outside, and Clown Analysis. Each separate song was written by only one member, with one exception. Our writing process is very individual, not collaborative, which we think led to a wide range of writing styles between songs. The album was mixed by Aaron Young and the cover art was created by Madeline Curtis. Tracking was done in the Preston's basement with one mic and Audacity. Eventually, with the entire rest of the album written and recorded without vocals, Anthony Nunez was brought in to finish vocals on Kitchen Suite, Outside, and Clandestiny. We all really liked old-school prog bands, especially Genesis, and were also heavily inspired by an obscure modern band called Bubblemath.Īs we got more serious, Genna and Jake started to lose interest in the band and started to drift away as vocalists, leaving the core writing group of Joe, Donovan, and Phoenix to work on composition while we looked for another singer. That's when we decided to write more serious "prog" stuff. We started by writing a series of joke songs that ended up on a short EP that's on Youtube called "Cooks Crew," but soon after, decided we wanted to do something more substantial. We are all cousins, are musically interested, and like a lot of the same bands. The band started with the core group of Donovan, Phoenix, Joe, Genna, and Jake. That version has not, it’s safe to say, had a shelf life comparable to the movie. (“She had great comic timing but no sense of time,” Curtis wrote in a memoir.) And a reinvention has been attempted before: Sugar, a musical that paid new attention to the singer first played by Monroe, opened in 1972. On-set antics have become a kind of lore: Wilder made Lemmon and Curtis test their costumes by sending them into the ladies’ room on the Samuel Goldwyn lot Curtis soaked his feet in buckets of ice to relieve the pain of standing for hours in three-inch heels, waiting for the notoriously unpunctual Monroe to make it to set. To some, it spans no less than all of life: sex, money, romance, violence, wit. The American Film Institute has deemed it the funniest movie of all time. It was lauded by critics and banned in Kansas, which took offense not at the cross-dressing or suggestions of same-sex love but at Monroe’s sultry seductions. Nominated for six Academy Awards, Some Like It Hot took home the award for best costume design. “The American public wasn’t ready for that in 1959.” Brown says ‘Nobody’s perfect?’… People ask me that,” Wilder once said. “Nobody’s perfect,” he shrugs in the famous-and groundbreaking for its time-last line of the film. When Jerry reveals he is not a she, Osgood is undeterred. (He poses, again, as a millionaire to woo her into bed.) And then there’s Jack Lemmon as Jerry, the trombone-playing buddy, who starts the film as the go-along guy but ventures off on a journey of his own when his female self, Daphne, is pursued by a (legitimate) millionaire named Osgood, played by Joe E. There’s Tony Curtis as Joe turned Josephine, the womanizing bass player who concocts the cross-dressing escape plan but can’t commit to it enough to curtail his desire for Sugar. There’s Marilyn Monroe as the bruised bombshell Sugar “Kane” Kowalczyk, a bourbon-sipping singer (“not much of one,” she admits) attempting to outrun her bad decisions. Those who know the original 1959 Billy Wilder film often adore it: the romp, the caper, the costumes! It’s a farce with a heart of gold, telling the story of two Prohibition-era male jazz musicians who bear accidental witness to a gangster shoot-up and then go on tour-in drag-with an all-girl band in order to escape the thugs.īut never mind the improbable plot (film critic Manohla Dargis once wrote that the entire movie feels as though “it was directed inside gigantic quotation marks”) the film is really all about the performances. Let’s get the dirty work out of the way: It might not be a great idea to adapt Some Like It Hot into a Broadway musical. This can include messages, such as “I am frustrated”, “I don’t know what to do”, “I am feeling misunderstood or unheard”, and “I am nervous”. If we look past the behaviour and the words for a moment (however brief), we can re-direct our focus on the message that our child is trying to give us. All behaviour is a form of communication.Remembering the following key points may be helpful: But if the child or youth is feeling something in addition to anger, those emotions are not being identified nor addressed. When parents are in this situation, they may punish the behaviour (which may be a justified and appropriate consequence). So, when we try to employ anger management strategies, the strategies may be unsuccessful. Feelings, such as shame, loneliness, guilt, panic, and hurt may be misinterpreted as “anger”. And just like infants and toddlers, expressing themselves may be reflected through behaviours rather than words. Others may be more difficult as their vocabulary may not be as developed or articulate. Some of these can be labelled quite easily and accurately (ex. We define it as “anger”, but can it be something else?Ĭhildren and youth are experiencing a sea of conflicting and confusing emotions. What we may not see are the underlying feelings that may be fueling this behaviour. On the surface, we see the behaviour: the anger, the “meltdown”. Our feelings can also be understood using this visualization. What we may not see, however, is the enormous monstrosity under the water, keeping the “tip of the iceberg” afloat. If exposed to an iceberg in close proximity, we would probably try to avoid approaching it for self-protection. Its future appears to be unpredictable and potentially dangerous and harmful. From the surface, we can see an intimidating structure with its unstable crevices and jagged edges. In my practice, I share with families the theory of the Feelings Iceberg, which can be helpful in understanding a child or youth’s behaviours and guiding effective responses.Ĭonsider the idea of an iceberg, bobbing up and down in the water. You can’t seem to understand how your sweet, loving child can switch, almost instantly, to someone who seems inconsolable, uncontrollable, and unrecognizable. Observing angry or aggressive behaviour can elicit feelings of sadness, fear and frustration. You desperately want to help your child but don’t know how.įor some of you, reading this scenario resonates with you. You watch him (or her) helplessly as he (or she) thrashes about, yelling and screaming, and saying hurtful things to you and others. You are feeling utterly exhausted as you endure your child’s latest “meltdown”. Laboratory tests: Blood tests like a complete blood count (CBC) can identify signs of blood chemistry abnormalities, such as vitamin deficiencies and drug abuse that may cause amnesia. You may take one or more tests based on your symptoms. Cognitive exam: Can include tests of logic, reasoning, judgment, and short- and long-term memory.Medical history: Your healthcare provider will ask questions regarding your medical history, the nature of your memory loss, when it began, and whether other symptoms have accompanied your symptoms of amnesia.Physical exam: Includes a neurological function test, including an assessment of reflexes, strength, balance, vision, hearing, gait (walking), motor strength, and control. It is usually temporary, though the incidents that occurred during the period that the drug affected you may be difficult or impossible to recall. Drug-induced amnesia: Can occur as a result of taking certain drugs during prescribed treatment, general anesthesia, or substance abuse.Physical symptoms like headaches, nausea, or dizziness may accompany these episodes. During that time, you are unable to make new memories, but you usually retain your memory of your identity, the identity of family members, and your ability to perform daily tasks. It is a temporary condition that usually lasts between one and 10 hours.
